How are hormones related to obesity?
The hormones leptin, insulin, oestrogens, androgens, and growth hormone affect our appetite, metabolism, and the distribution of body fat. Individuals who are obese possess hormone levels that promote the accumulation of body fat.
Endocrinologists play a vital role in assisting patients struggling with obesity by tackling the root hormonal imbalances and metabolic issues that lead to weight gain and difficulty in shedding weight.

FAQs
Endocrinologists are crucial in supporting patients with obesity by addressing hormonal and metabolic imbalances that lead to weight gain and hinder weight loss. They conduct hormonal assessments, using blood tests to evaluate hormone levels that affect metabolism and appetite. Additionally, they identify and treat underlying endocrine disorders like hypothyroidism, Cushing’s syndrome, and PCOS, which may contribute to obesity and complicate weight loss efforts.
If you have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 to 30, you’re considered overweight.
If you’re overweight, losing even 5% of your body weight reduces your risk of developing chronic conditions.
If you have a BMI greater than 30, you’re considered obese.
Obesity is a chronic condition that develops gradually. Although unhealthy lifestyle choices play a part, it is now understood that factors such as environment, genetics, metabolism, behaviour, and socioeconomic status also have a significant and intricate influence.
