Comprehensive Diabetes Care in Singapore: From Early Screening to Effective Management, Including Gestational, Type 1 & 2 and Complex Diabetic Cases

Living with Diabetes

Approximately 30% of individuals in Singapore are prone to developing diabetes in their lifetime.

Insulin is a vital hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar (glucose) levels.

Diabetes is a lifelong  metabolic disorder marked by high blood sugar levels, stemming from the body’s inadequate production of insulin (Type 1 Diabetes or Insulin-Dependent Diabetes) or inability to effectively use the insulin it produces (Type 2 Diabetes or Insulin-Resistant Diabetes).

By adopting a comprehensive approach that includes medication, lifestyle modifications, and regular monitoring, individuals with diabetes can lead healthier lives and minimise the impact of this condition on their overall well-being. Regular diabetes care empowers individuals to make informed choices, fostering a proactive and positive approach to health.

Diabetes Signs & Symptoms

Recognising the signs of diabetes is crucial for timely intervention and treatment.

The typical symptoms include:

Heightened thirst

More frequent need to urinate

Unaccounted weight loss

Fatigue

Identifying these signs early and promptly seeking treatment is essential for averting further health issues.

Understanding the Different Types of Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes

This autoimmune condition results in the immune system attacking and destroying the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Typically diagnosed early in life, individuals with Type 1 diabetes rely entirely on insulin injections.

Type 2 Diabetes

Marked by the body’s resistance to insulin, Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body struggles to use glucose effectively despite an overworked pancreas and gradually diminishing insulin production. Often developing in adults, it’s increasingly being diagnosed in younger individuals.

Risk factors include obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and a family history of diabetes.

Management includes lifestyle modifications (like a balanced diet and regular exercise), oral medications, and sometimes insulin therapy.

Gestational Diabetes

This form of diabetes emerges during pregnancy due to the pancreas being unable to meet the heightened metabolic demands, leading to hyperglycemia. Women with gestational diabetes face a significantly higher risk of developing diabetes later in life. Without proper management during pregnancy, it may lead to delivery complications and long-term health risks for the baby, such as excessive birth weight and increased risk of developing diabetes.

Prediabetes

Prediabetes is a critical health condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. It’s a warning to take action. Adopting a healthier diet, exercising, and losing weight can help prevent progression to type 2 diabetes. Regular check-ups with an endocrinologist can help monitor your condition and provide personalised strategies to manage and potentially reverse prediabetes.

Diagnosis of Diabetes

To receive the specialised diabetic care that you deserve, it’s important to see an Endocrinologist (a medical doctor specialising in hormonal disorders) in Singapore. They can thoroughly assess your condition before suggesting changes to your care regimen. Some key tests they can do include:
Fasting Blood Glucose Test: Measures blood sugar after an overnight fast. A level of 126 mg/dL or higher indicates diabetes.
Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Measures blood sugar before and after drinking a glucose solution. A reading of 200 mg/dL or higher two hours after drinking indicates diabetes.
Hemoglobin A1c Test: Shows average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. An A1c level of 6.5% or higher suggests diabetes.
Random Blood Glucose Test: Measures blood sugar at any time of the day, regardless of when you last ate. A level of 200 mg/dL or higher indicates diabetes.

The Treatment Options Available for Managing Diabetes

Administering insulin or using other diabetes medications frequently forms a key component of diabetes treatment. Alongside these medications, adopting a healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, ensuring adequate sleep, and stress management are essential for controlling the condition.
